Description:
Watercolor. 12-3/4" x 9-3/4". No date. Signed by Cummings at the lower left with "Pornic" written in his hand on the lower right. Cummings visited Pornic, a seaside village on the French Atlantic coast, and painted a number of outdoor scenes while he was there, frequently of French peasants at their work. This painting was part of an exhibit at the Gotham Book Mart some time in the late '60s or '70s and bears their notation "GBM #412" on verso. Although a prolific painter, Cummings seldom signed his work. No Binding. Fine.

Cruikshank, George, Phrenological Illustrations, or an Artist's View of the Crainiological System of Doctors Gall and Spurzheim, London: Published for the artist by Frederick Arnold, 86, Fleet Street, E.C. 1873. Price Five Shillings, Plain; Seven and Sixpence, coloured. An oblong folio, bound in gilt-decorated full maroon morocco, raised bands, decorated and lettered spine. Collation: [3 initial blanks; dedication page; a signed original pen-and-ink sketch, with two additional sketches superimposed; Cruikshank's Preface to the 1873 edition; 2 pages of text; 6 full-pages of engravings; an original front cover to the first edition bound in after the plates; 3 concluding blanks] A presentation copy from George Cruikshank, with a page of original sketches bound into a signed custom binding by Sangorski and Suttcliffe, London. Signed and inscribed: To W[alter] H[ines] Page with the regard of Geo. Cruikshank, Jan. 12, 1875." A unique variant of Cohn 178, and a presentation copy signed twice by Cruikshank, then a living legend, to the man who later served as the United States Ambassador to Great Britain during the First World War. There is a tag of John Howell, Importer, San Francisco. The hinges have been expertly repaired, a fine copy. Cruikshank's rapier wit was never sharper than when lampooning the pseudo-science of phrenology.

Description:
c. 1921. In the 1920s, E.E. Cummings was a regular contributor of both writing and artwork to The Dial magazine, which was the preeminent Modernist journal of its time, publishing such writers as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Cocteau, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ford Madox Ford and such artists as Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky. Cummings was only 25 years old when his first pieces were accepted for The Dial and, notably, it was the only place where his poems and his artwork were published side by side on a regular basis. The January, 1921 issue had four drawings and a poem ("Puella Mea") by Cummings: this is Cummings' original sketch for one of those drawings, perhaps the most well-known of them, of a fawn on its hind legs, next to a nude woman, beneath a tree. This sketch was used as his pencil transfer, and as such is drawn on both sides of the paper. The final product, which was ink and graphite on paper, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a bequest of Scofield Thayer, Cummings'…

Description:
London, September 1900. Booklet. This early and noteworthy Churchill signature dates from September 1900. It is found in an autograph booklet signed by 29 journalists attending The Annual Conference of the Institute of Journalists in London. In September 1900, Winston Churchill was just 25 years old, a soldier and war-correspondent who had yet to hold elected office. On 8 September 1900, Churchill wrote to his mother, Lady Randolph: "My dear Mamma, I am sorry not to be able to come until Wednesday morning, but I thought it better to attend the Annual Dinner of the Conference of the Institute of Journalists, at which I have been invited to reply for the war-correspondents. It is a good thing now and again to make a speech unconnected with politics and it is also a good thing, and opportunity not to be missed, to speak before the writers of Great Britain. I hope you will make my apologies to Lady Sassoon. I shall have four days at Alvie before I go south to Oldham, and I am looking forward very…
