A collection of seven essays on the art of illustration, with each piece containing minor revisions between their serialized versions (in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, New Century, Harper's Weekly, and the New Review) and the book publication. Uncommon signed; while we note two copies with autograph notes tipped in, no signed or inscribed copies appear in the auction record. Edel & Laurence A38; BAL 10601. Ordinary Issue. 12mo. (15.25cm); first binding in dark green linen-grain cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [x],175,[1]pp, with portrait frontispiece of the author (with accompanying tissue guard) and 7 plates of illustrations. Signed "Henry James Jr / Oct.1906" in pencil on front endpaper. Hint of sunning to spine, some pinpoint wear to spine ends and corner tips, else a clean, very Near Fine copy, lacking the scarce dustjacket.
