Steel-engraved frontispieces, half-titles, and 45 other plates (49 in all); nearly 900 other wood and steel engravings, many full-page. Bound in brown morocco; paneled spine with raised bands, gilt lettering and floral decorations; ruled sides with artist's palette and title gilt-stamped on both covers; all edges gilt. Spotty foxing to frontispiece and half-title in both volumes, otherwise clean plates and text. Joints lightly rubbed. 13" x 10" x 2.5" (each volume). [Blanck, BAL 1732, second state: "The statement 'Edited by William Cullen Bryant' appears on the title-page of each volume...."
