Splendid half leather set of this lavishly illustrated guide to the sights and landscape of Great Britain and Europe. With dramatic, somewhat romantic full page, tissue guarded steel engravings and numerous wood engravings within the text. The first three volumes concern the british isles. The final two detail the historical and geographic sights of europe, from the Fjords to the ruins of Virgil's house in Brindisi. With engravings done by J.W. Whymper and others from pictures by Birket Foster, E.M. Wimperis, John Douglas Woodward and more. Half leather with red cloth boards. Elaborate gilt decoration to spines. All edges gilt. Marbled end-papers. 4to. (320x260mm) Rubbing to edges, esp joints on one volume. Occasional light marking and nicks to covers. Mild occasional foxing within. Contents otherwise clean and prim.
