Description:
Original illustrated wrappers, tall 8vo (7 1/4 x 9 3/4), includes 12 full page illustrations in addition to wrapper illustrations. Notes and musical score on inside covers. Wrappers are chipped, and there are a cople of pieces missing from the top of the back cover, but don't appear to be affecting text. Spine is split but holding, thanks to tape spine; some minor soiling. The song 'Ten Little Niggers' emerged from the minstrel shows in the South shortly after the Civil War.These shows became increasingly racist as time went on. They were known as Jim Crow shows and then became coon shows. While 'Ten Little Niggers' would appear in Children's nursery rhyme books, there real purpose was to present blacks in demeaning ways. Tffany M.B. Anderson: "Ten Little Niggers": The Making of a Black Man's Consciousness.

[New York], 17 February 1953.. Original borderless gelatin silver print, 23.5 x 18 cm (9.25 x 7.25 inches). Fine. A fine portrait of the young singer, then in the ascendance of her career, less than a year after her role as St. Settlement in the Broadway revival of Gertrude Stein's FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS. This print bears Van Vechten's blindstamp, and on the verso his ink studio stamp. The subject, date and negative number are also written on the verso in ink, in Van Vechten's hand. There is a print of another negative from the same sitting, albeit dated in the catalogue entry a week earlier - an impossibility as it is separated from this photograph by only one other exposure and the set and dress are identical - in the LC Van Vechten photo archive. Trenton, New Jersey: Printed by David Naar, "True American" Office, 1864. Near Fine condition. Clean and tight. Three tiny chips near the spine. A very attractive copy, remarkably well preserved, especially considering the age (published 1864) and fragility of its thin paper binding. SEE PHOTOS. NO foxing. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Includes Ricord's report to Joel Parker, Governor of New Jersey, on the condition of the state's public schools. A substantial appendix lists reports by the various town superintendents in each of 21 counties from Atlantic to Warren. Since this report was published while the Civil War was still being fought, the section on "Schools for Colored Children" may be of some interest: "There is no section of the law nor any decision of the courts that deprives colored children of the advantages of public school instruction
it shall be the duty of the trustees of the several school districts to apply the…

The notebook reads "Complimenst of Hancock & Briner, dealers in Dry Goods, Gents' Pants, Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes and General Merchandise. Veedersburg, Ind. Freese, Boener & Co.
