About This Item
New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1929. First edition. 8vo, 383pp. Yellow cloth lettered and decorated in brown, top edge stained brown in illustrated jacket by William Gropper. Some smudging to boards else near fine in toned jacket with rubbing to folds and light chipping at spine ends and corners, else nicely preserved. Very good.
Methodist minister and author from Texas, Charles W. Ferguson's (1901-1987) first novel, and second book following his The Confusion of Tongues, being a criticism and overview of religious sects. This satirical novel is a picture of university life at the time, of course including football. Interestingly, the book pokes fun at the idea of the Chancellor of the school secretly taking care of his athletes financially under pressure from his rich alumni donors. A very prescient topic. This book is quite uncommon in a presentable jacket. .
