167 pages. John Hay, an American Statesman and Author, worked along side President Lincoln as his private secretary. He rose as an ambassador and eventually served as Secretary of State under Presidents McKinley and T Roosevelt. Pike County Ballads - written in the dialect of Pike County, Illinois, where Hay went to school as a child - was published (with other Hay poetry) as a book in 1871,brought Hayes great success. Hay, along with John Nickolay another secretary to President Lincoln, also published a 10 volume biography of Lincoln in 1890.
This book is well worn, and well read, though the green cloth covers with beveled edges and gold gilt lettering still stand out. Pages are mostly clean and unmarked, but a few have some staining.
