The rear inner paper hinges are split - through to the webbing in Volume One - but NO Inscriptions or marks, APART FROM some old damp-staining to the portrait frontispiece to Volume One only. Most of the pages of Both volumes are uncut to the top edge (unused and unread) and Internally, apart from the light brown old damp-stains to the frontispiece of volume one, the books are Very Good, Very Clean, Tight and Bright. Volume One = (xvi) + 438 pp. Illustrated with a Portrait Frontispiece steel engraving (with some damp-staining) and one other full page steel engraving of Tunis (small dampstain to the bottom blank margin) ; and with 8 wood engravings in the text, including a small map of Malta. "This is a remarkable account in 'Letters' of the Author's journey to the Holy Land, with descriptions of Ancient and 'Modern' Jewish culture/traditions/happenings in France, Malta, Tunisia, Constantinople, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. Moses Margoliouth (Born in Suwalki, Poland in 1818, he arrived in England in 1837 and converted to the Christian faith the following year) was a learned and respected minister in the Church of England of the nineteenth century, but also an author of many books on Judaism. This work exemplifies the growing interest in England about the biblical land of Israel during the 19th century and growing identification with the Nation of Israel, leading to increased Missionary activity, but also to a support of Zionism." . Rare in depth look at how Jews and Jewish traditions are viewed at this time. Jewish Interest. A Scarce Title in its original form. Overall an attractive and complete ORIGINAL 2 Volume SET. See IMAGES. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
