Third edition. Two volumes bound as one, with the second part presernting the title: "Carminum poetarum nouem, lyricae poeseo¯s principum, fragmenta." Translated and edited by French printer and classical scholar Henri Estienne. [6], 7-270, [2] + [3], 4-196, [4] pages.Handsome antique volume, measuring approximately 3.5" x 4.75", has been rebound in blind-stamped dark brown leather, with raised bands and stamped gilt ornamental designs to spine and front/rear covers. Covers display light shelfwear. Binding is firm. Text block has gilt edges. Book has new endpapers. Title pages exhibit light soiling and minor foxing, with initial title page also showing minor markings. Pages display sporadic light foxing. Title pages are illustrated with publisher's device. Text is bilingual, with Greek original parallel to Latin translation.The first volume contains Estienne's dedication to German Lutheran reformer, philologist and pedagogue Philipp Melanchthon; the second, a poem praising Markus and Johann Fugger.

Later panelled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, joints starting, a trifle marked. Later inked ownership inscription and armorial bookplate of Thomas Gaisford to FEP, inked ownership inscription of Smallwell to recto of FFEP. A mid-seventeenth-century edition, translated and edited by Henri Estienne, of a collection of odes to victory attributed to Pindar, the ancient Greek poet considered among the greatest exponents of choral poetry. In these pieces, the author sings the victories of the Doric aristocratic youth (to which he belonged) at the Pan-Hellenic games.
