About This Item
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1936. 171 pages. SIGNED by the author and inscribed by him to Mississippi historian Percy Lee Rainwater. First printing of this history of the development of the Illinois Central Raiload from New Orleans to Cairo. The author's thesis is that the railroad was intended to open markets for cotton in the American northwest, thereby assuring the dominance of "King Cotton" and the endurance of slavery. He concludes that the ultimate completion of the route came 30 years too late for the accomplishment of those objectives. The book is clean and tight, with one bumped corner of the front cover; lightly worn at corners and head and foot of spine.. SIGNED. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
