Darley, engraved by Morse, and with more Darley plates within; originally produced by Cooper in 1823, one of his first efforts and the first of what became the group of Leatherstocking Tales featuring the resourceful woodsman Natty Bumppo; printed double column; bound in the original publishers' beveled-edge blue cloth, decoratively blindstamped and with a gilt 'arm and tomahawk' motif on cover, gilt spine titles and quiver & tomahawk decoration; some edge, tips wear and soiling to the binding; final leaf a bit wrinkled; (contained in) a blue cloth case, with a slip-on leather spine cover having gilt titles and date; a clean, in very good condition, a nice illustrated copy of this American frontier classic contained in the case..
