About This Item

Zurich, Sumptibus authoris, Typis Gessnerianis, 1708. Nissen BBI 1751. Très bel exemplaire. *** In-4 de (2), 36 pp., 5 planches dépliantes h.-t. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. Illustrated by 5 large and beautifull engraved plates, most of them of fossils' fishes. The title translates as "The grievances and claims of fishes". Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was the first to understand that fossils were the remains of organic beings and presented the fish themselves as making this case. The fossil collection that Scheuchzer began assembling in 1690 soon became famous and brought Scheuchzer to the attention of the scholarly world. He worked on a great variety of fossils and is considered the founder of European paleontology. Bound with : Agrostographia, sive, graminum, juncorum, cyperorum, cyperoidum iisque affinium historia. Zurich, Typis et Sumptibus Bodmerianis, 1719. (40), 512, (24) pp., 19 plates. First edition of this work on grass, illustrated by 19 engraved plates. Very nice copy in contemporary binding. - -.
