About This Item

San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1994. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1994. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 168 pages. Anthology of literary excerpts on subject. One of the most beautiful books on Paris ever published in the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run by Chronicle Books as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. "Autographed Copy" gold oval sticker pasted in front. Presents Steven Barclay's "A Place In The World Called Paris". Edited by Steven Barclay, with a Foreword by Susan Sontag, and somberly evocative charcoal drawings by Miles Hyman. "An unprecedented gathering of the twentieth century's most distinguished writers, each revealing a special facet of the City of Light. Excerpts from fiction, poetry, essays, and memoirs present fresh and unexpected views of Paris: Franz Kafka on riding the Metro; Truman Capote on visiting Colette in her apartment in the Palais-Royal; Jane Kramer on Parisian style; Claude Debussy and Rainer Maria Rilke on the Luxembourg Gardens; E. B. White on the Liberation; and Maya Angelou on Paris nightlife. Susan Sontag evokes both the real and the longed-for Paris, where she lived on and off for many years. Miles Hyman, an artist living in Paris, has created atmospheric charcoal drawings that introduce each section of the book. Steven Barclay has lent his special vision of the city to this book through his insightful selection of pieces and his intimate Preface" (Publisher's blurb). Each literary excerpt, no matter how brief, is a masterpiece in and of itself. An absolute "must-have" title for Modern First collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Steven Barclay. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great anthology. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the Second and Third Printings or the Softcover Edition. Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Some of the greatest writers of the 20th century on the greatest European city of the 19th and 20th centuries. A fine copy. . ISBN 0811805867.
