Presentation copy, inked inscription to foot of title page: 'Mr. Hardinge. from the Author'. The first edition of Trophime-Gerard, marquis de Lally-Tollendal's (1751-1830) impassioned advocacy for Louis XVI, composed, whilst in exile in Britain, in an effort to prevent the monarch's execution by the National Convention during the French Revolution.
