About This Item

Plakun Trava The Doukhobors, Tarasoff, Koozma J. Published by Mir Publication Society, Grand Forks, B.C., Canada, 1982. First Edition/First Printing. Signed by author on titles page. 4to up to 12" tall. 271 pages including photographs, maps, appendices, bibliography. Brown tweed boards with gilt titles front and spine. Volume is in pristine as new condition; Unclipped dustjacket is in fine condition with the lightest of shelf wear.
"Doukhobors are a sect of Russian dissenters, many of whom now live in western Canada. They are known for a radical pacifism which brought them notoriety during the 20th century. Today, their descendants in Canada number approximately 20,000, with one third still active in their culture. While the Doukhobors have often been referred to as a "religious sect" or an "ethnic group"; Koozma Tarasoff presents a convincing case that they are perhaps best described as a "social movement".
"In depicting their experience, as an ethnographer and historian who is also a Doukhobor, the author succeeds in not only producing a history book, but also in making a significant social statement. Those who encounter Plakun Trava will come away not only with a better appreciation of the Doukhobors, but also with a better understanding of the complex interplay of forces and ideas in the 20th century Canadian society, and even in the international arena". A seminal work now out of print.
