Brentano's, 1916. First Edition. Leather Binding. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 2 volumes, complete as issued. Attractively bound in period 3/4 brown morocco over green cloth, spines with raised bands and gilt-ruled compartments with floral designs at corners, covers bordered in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (some fading and darkening, some rubbing). xxxiii, [1], 245; xxv, [1], 340 pages. Later American 2-volume issue of 7 plays in all ('Widower's Houses', 'The Philanderer', 'Mrs. Warren's Profession', 'Arms and the Man', 'Candida', 'The Man of Destiny' and 'You Never Can Tell'), with Shaw's prefaces and introductions to both volumes. With American copyright date of 1905 on verso of both title pages.b/w Title vignettes; Title Pages (red/black).

Synopsis

One of Shaw's most unusual and enduringly popular plays. With SAINT JOAN (1923) Shaw reached the height of his fame and Joan is one of his finest creations; forceful, vital, and rebelling against the values that surround her. The play distils Shaw's views on the subjects of politics, religion and creative evolution.
