The three-volume set, vellum over boards, as published by Doubleday, Doran, this copy numbered 404 from the edition of 537 sets, each set signed by Kipling on the justification page of Volume 1. This is an ex-library copy, with library stamps and markings on the front and back of each title page, a bookplate one the front endpaper of each volume, and a library card pocket and sign-out sheet pasted to the rear endpaper and flyleaf of each volume. Library call numbers have been removed from each of the spines. The interior pages are otherwise clean except for one or two pages in each volume which may contain a library stamp. The bindings are tight. The covers are lightly soiled and the spines discolored. The covers of Volumes 2 and 3 (especially) have a rose-colored stain, which is perhaps bleed-through from the paper over which the vellum is pasted. The points of each cover are worn through and there is a 1" split to the vellum over the gutter of Volume 1. Detailed photos are available upon request.…

London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1929. Limited, First Edition. Leather. Very Good/Good. Quarto. Three volumes. "This is No. 42 of an edition of 525 copies, SIGNED by the author, of which 500 are for sale." Composed in the Baskerville Fount and printed on hand-made paper at the Chiswick Press. With the plain grey/taupe dust wrappers, over the original glassine wrapper, and lettered in red on the covers and spines. Full maroon morocco, gilt spine lettering, 5 raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, volume 1 contains the engraved frontispiece portrait by Francis Dodd and signed in pencil on lower right. Bookplate to front pastedowns in each volume. Vol. 2 has a few tiny worm holes in the joint, not affecting the interior or integrity of the volume. Dust jackets are browned, vols. 2 and 3 with nicks to head of spine and small closed tears. The dust jacket of vol. 1 is a bit battered with splits to the joints, chipping to head of spine, chips to corners with larger chip to front bottom corner, and chipping to flap folds. Overall, a very good, clean, tight set.

All 3 volumes are in VERY GOOD condition in Good dust jackets protected in removable archival covers. The books themselves show marginal shelf rubbing of the bottom edges and corners, spines ever so slightly toned, otherwise the bindings are strong and tight, the texts are clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. The fragile dust jackets show the spines tanned and chipped somewhat, marginal loss along the edges, otherwise distinct. As pictured.
