About This Item
London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London, William Heinemann Ltd, 1931. Octavo, [xii], 89 pages. Deep purple cloth extensively patterned in a white cobble-stone design; leading and bottom edges uncut; printed paper labels on the front cover and spine (with a spare spine label tipped in at the rear of the book); spine sunned; cloth a little marked, rubbed and bumped at the extremities (and the top and bottom edges of the rear cover); scattered foxing (moderate in a few places); uncut leading edge of one preliminary leaf a little chipped; later small inscription on the front pastedown; overall a very good copy. This copy contains corrections and alterations to the text in the author's hand on 30 pages. Most of them (on 24 pages) are minor typos or changes from double to single inverted commas. However, in six instances (pages 4, 24, 26, 55, 60 and 82) the text has been changed. In 'Repair Shop' (page 26), the entire first line has been deleted ('Because not nearly, therefore quite,') and the second line altered from 'The crash was worse than ever;' to now read 'Be sure, the crash was worse than ever:'. In 'Single Fare' (page 82), twelve words have been deleted and replaced with another fifteen. Higginson & Williams A36 (1000 copies). Provenance: Margaret Russell (née Reed), nanny to Jenny, the first child of Robert Graves and Nancy Nicholson, then lifelong friend of Robert Graves; by descent.
