first edition tall 8vo. (22.7 x 14.5 cms.) 51, [1 (blank)]pp., wood engraving of three cherubs on title page, other type ornaments throughout, original pale blue wrappers, title page repeated in the front wrapper, edges untrimmed, upper 3 cms. of wrappers lightly toned or sunned, very tiny chip from fore-edge of front wrapper and at its top gutter corner, some minor chipping of wrapper 'spine', else very good. A very well preserved copy in its original state. Rare.

Most copies of Bridges' first book Poems by Robert Bridges (1873) were destroyed. With his second book of verse The Growth of Love (1876), published by Bumpus in a small edition of perhaps as few as 100 copies and in a similar format to this book, Bridges after a few copies had been distributed burned the remaining copies. This Poems (1879), his third book of verse, would also have been printed in small numbers and that in turn was followed in 1880 by Poems .. Third Series, again published by Bumpus in a similar format. All of these were published anonymously and the last two of "1879 and 1880 .. contain some of his finest lyrics" [O.D.N.B.].
