IT ALSO INCLUDES POE'S 1ST EVER-PUBLISHED POEM, "TAMERLANE," ORIGINALLY PRINTED WHEN HE WAS ONLY 18

A stunning Victorian Era edition of Poe's Poems. This printing has all of Poe's most well-known and monumental works and rarer titles. It includes some exquisite engravings that have all been very well preserved. Other than the lovely collection of his writings, this poetical tome has an extensive memoir of Poe. I have been collecting 19th-century Poe books for years and have a rather extensive collection, but I have never seen another one like this, nor can I find another after searching all known book sites. Although it was printed over half a century before the First World War of 1914, it's been exceptionally well-kept. They don't make books this good anymore, and I don't think they ever will; I would snag this one before it's gone.

This is an exquisite and sought-after Poe book from the 19th century, capturing the haunting essence of one of America's most celebrated literary figures, Edgar Allan Poe. This literary gem, treasured by collectors and literature enthusiasts, embodies the enigmatic and macabre spirit that defined Poe's genius.

This rare 19th-century edition boasts a collection of Poe's most beloved and chilling poems. Within its pages, readers can immerse themselves in the atmospheric realms of "The Raven," "The Bells," and "Annabelle Lee," among many others. Each story, crafted with Poe's signature poetic language and psychological depth, evokes a sense of foreboding and suspense, leaving an indelible mark on the reader's imagination.

Accompanying the text are mesmerizing illustrations that further enhance the haunting nature of Poe's tales. Hand-drawn in intricate detail, these evocative engravings mirror the darkness and despair that permeate the stories, capturing the essence of Poe's macabre vision.

The rarity of this edition lies not only in its literary significance but also in its scarcity. With only a limited number of copies in existence, this book stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Edgar Allan Poe and his profound influence on the Gothic genre.

For collectors and literary enthusiasts alike, acquiring this 19th-century masterpiece is akin to possessing a piece of literary history—a gateway into the world of one of the greatest literary minds of all time.

The overall condition of this book is very good based on its age of over 140 years. The covers and spine have average age and shelf wear but still play beautifully and showcase lovely details with bright gold motifs. The interior pages are naturally age-toned and have some regular time but are well-kept. The introduction, which is the memoir, has rounded corners on the upper margin, while the rest of the book has angled corners. The binding is solid, "Not floppy," like most 19th-century printings. It is a very beautiful book with some normal aging but still very lovely.

Other than the beautiful collection of poems, this volume also includes:

THE POETIC PRINCIPLE
"The Poetic Principle" is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe, written near the end of his life and published posthumously in 1850, the year after his death. It is a work of literary criticism in which Poe presents his literary theory.

THE POWER OF WORDS
The Power of Words" is a philosophical dialogue by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). It was first published in 1845.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF COMPOSITION
"The Philosophy of Composition" is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe that provides insights into his approach to writing and the creative process behind one of his most famous poems, "The Raven." Published in the 19th century, this essay offers a glimpse into Poe's unique literary theory and sheds light on his thoughts on the construction and purpose of poetry.

In "The Philosophy of Composition," Poe presents a rational and calculated method for crafting a successful poem. He emphasizes the importance of unity of effect, asserting that a work of art should evoke a specific emotional response in the reader or audience. Poe argues that a poem should be meticulously planned from its inception, with every element serving a purpose to contribute to the desired effect.

Poe describes the writing process as a deliberate and logical sequence of decisions. He discusses the importance of selecting a subject capable of evoking the desired emotional response and suggests that the death of a beautiful woman, as portrayed in "The Raven," is particularly effective in its ability to elicit melancholy and a sense of loss. Poe also emphasizes the significance of choosing the right tone and atmosphere to enhance the work's overall effect.

Furthermore, Poe advocates for carefully selecting and arranging words, highlighting the importance of rhythm, meter, and sound. He emphasizes the musicality of poetry, stating that the sounds of the words should contribute to the desired emotional impact. Poe explains his deliberate choice of the word "Nevermore" as the refrain in "The Raven," explaining how he strategically employed its sound and repetition to create a haunting and memorable effect.

Overall, "The Philosophy of Composition" reflects Poe's belief in the importance of careful planning, precise execution, and unity of effect in creating a successful work of art. It provides valuable insights into his approach to writing. It sheds light on the meticulous craftsmanship that he applied to his poetry, ultimately contributing to his enduring legacy as a master of the macabre and a pioneer of American literature.

Regarding the terrible end of Poe's life, I have probably studied that as much as I have his literary works. On September 27, 1849, Poe was supposed to board a ferry from Richmond, Virginia, to Baltimore, Maryland, and then on to New York, but he disappeared for days and was later found outside a bar "serving as a polling station" one cold day. He was wearing someone else's clothes, a beaten-up straw hat, and was in terribly bad condition. During this time, there were gangs that would take people off the streets, force them to drink, beat them, and change their clothes to vote multiple times. I will let you decide for yourself...
