"The text of the poems here adopted is that of the Lorimer Graham copy of the edition of 1845, revised by marginal corrections in Poe's hand.

This is a very scarce 19th-century edition of Poe's Poetical Works and the only one I can trace with these beautiful green covers and gold motifs. Prior to listing it, I checked the copywrite records from Google Books as well as Worldcat to verify it is indeed the 1st issue from the publishing house. It is comprised of some of Poe's most notable works as well as some harder-to-find poems. The two Daguerreotype photos within it are very well preserved and are pressed into the paper rather than printed on top. It also has the facsimile of Poe's handwritten notes from Lenore, which I have never found in any other edition of a Poe book "And I have had a few..." A rare, beautiful, and stunning edition.

The condition of this book is good based on the fact that it was printed during the Victorian era of the 19th century. It does have some normal wear associated with a volume over 125 years old but has been exceptionally well-kept. This includes some shelf wear, age, rubbing, scratches, and use of the covers and spine. There is a small crease to the rear cover. The interior pages are naturally age toned but in very nice condition.

In regards to the terrible end to Poe's life, I have probably studied that as much as I have his literary works. On September 27, 1849, Poe was supposed to board a ferry from Richmond, Virginia, to Baltimore, Maryland, and then on to New York, but he disappeared for days and was later found outside a bar "serving as a polling station" one cold day. He was wearing someone else's clothes, a beaten-up straw hat, and was in terribly bad condition. During this time, there were gangs that would take people off the streets, force them to drink, beat them, and change their clothes to vote multiple times. I will let you decide for yourself...
