This is a very beautiful 1895 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's poetry that has been very well-preserved for over 125 years. It includes all of his most monumental works but also has the edition of some rarer poems and writing from his early youth: a scarce edition and the only one I can trace currently offered with these beautiful covers. There is something so much more special when holding and reading a 19th-century printing that you don't get from a new copy. When this book was originally released, it was priced at $0.75 in 1895, which would equate to about $32 today, a rather pricey edition for the 1800s. They don't make them this good anymore, and I don't think they ever will. I would snag this one before it's gone...

The overall condition of this book is very good, considering it was printed during the Victoria Era. It does have some of the normal aging attributes associated with a volume from the 19th century. This includes some normal age and shelf wear to the covers and spine. The interior pages are naturally age toned. For this age, it's very good. It measures 4'' x 6''.

THE POETIC PRINCIPLE:
"The Poetic Principle" is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe, written near the end of his life and published posthumously in 1850, the year after his death. It is a work of literary criticism in which Poe presents his literary theory. It is based on a series of lectures Poe had given late in his lifetime. The essay was based on Poe's lecture in Providence, Rhode Island, at the Franklin Lyceum. The lecture reportedly drew an audience of 2,000 people.

Some Poe scholars have suggested that "The Poetic Principle" was inspired in part by the critical failure of his two early poems, "Al Aaraaf" and "Tamerlane," after which he never wrote another long poem. From this experience, Poe surmised that long poems could not sustain a proper mood or maintain a high-quality poetic form and were inherently flawed.
