HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents ONE OF ONLY FIFTY COPIES IN THE WORLD from the LIMITED and SIGNED FIRST EDITION of POEMS AT HOME by JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY. VERY GOOD PLUS condition. Bowen-Merrill of Indianapolis (L. Frank Baum's publisher, later becoming Bobbs-Merrill) was Riley's first publisher (after all, he was an Indiana guy). Bowen-Merrill had a disastrous fire in 1890, destroying most of the business and taking 10 lives. This volume was published by Century in New York, yet this 50 volume LIMITED EDITION seems to have been controlled by Bowen-Merrill. Opposite the copyright page appears: "Of this First Impression of Poems Here at Home, Fifty copies…..have been issued with an autographed portrait on japan vellum (signed by) The Bowen-Merrill Co. (printed) This is Number (penned) 14." A SIGNED FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF THE AUTHOR is present. 4 1/2" x 7", 187 pages in Very Good Plus condition, with some smudging and light tanning. Cover (special for limited edition, cream w/ elaborate gold gilt designs and particulars, while standard First Edition cover was green with gold lettering) in Good Plus condition, with thoroughly taped spine to prevent separation, rubbing and staining. No dust jacket or slip cover (as designed?) E. W. Kemble was a very famous illustrator.

First Edition A catalogue of the royal and noble authors of England, Scotland, and Ireland; with lists of their works
Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (24 September 1717 – 2 March 1797), better known as Horace Walpole, was an English writer, art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He had Strawberry Hill House built in Twickenham, south-west London, reviving the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors. His literary reputation rests on the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. They have been published by Yale University Press in 48 volumes. The youngest son of the first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, he became the 4th and last Earl of Orford on his nephew's death in 1791. His barony of Walpole descended to his first cousin once removed of the same name but Baron Walpole of… Read More

Description:
Green leather spine with gilt banding and decoration. Red marbled boards.
The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing read the novel in February 1888 "for refreshment" but felt that it showed "incomprehensible weakness of story". Like nearly all of Dickens's novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. Dickens had visited America in 1842 in part as a failed attempt to get the US publishers to honour copyright laws. He satirized the country as a place filled with… Read More

Description:
Tan leather binding with red title plate, gilt banding and lettering on the spine. Questionable, a first tourist guide - In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries it was fashionable to take a boat tour down the Wye Valley, to view its romantic sites and picturesque landscape. 'Tourists' dined at specific locations, took walks to particular viewpoints and visited specific romantic ruins, making the 'Wye Tour' one of the first package holidays. In 1768 Gilpin published a popular Essay on Prints, where he defined the picturesque as "that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty", based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting. During the late 1760s and 1770s, Gilpin travelled extensively in the summer holidays and applied his principles to the landscapes he saw, committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks. Gilpin's tour journals circulated in manuscript to friends such as the poet William Mason and a… Read More

Tan leather spine with red title plate, gilt banding and title on the spine. Light brown boards. Translated from Persian by Nathaniel Braffey Haled.
A Second improved edition by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed – 1781 A Good Clean Copy The Gentoo Code (also known as A Code of Gentoo Laws or Ordinations of the Pundits) is a legal code translated from Sanskrit (in which it was known as vivādārṇavasetu) into Persian by Brahmin scholars; and then from Persian into English by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed, a British grammarian working for the East India Company. Vivādārṇavasetu is a digest of Hindu law in 21 sections (taraṅga) compiled for Warren Hastings by the pandits. The translation was funded and encouraged by Warren Hastings as a method of consolidating company control on the Indian subcontinent. It was translated into English with a view to know about the culture and local laws of various parts of Indian subcontinent. It was printed privately by the East India Company in London in 1776 under the… Read More

Los Angeles: Ward Richie, 1929. Octavo. 2pp. This is the second production noted in the bibliography of premier Southern California printer, Ward Richie. The edition consisted of 150 copies; it was a student project, done while Richie attended Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles. The choice of a Carl Sandburg poem is significant, as Sandburg and Richie shared a longtime friendship with Los Angeles bookseller and publisher, Jake Zeitlin. This is one of the scarcest of early Sandburg editions. 1printed sheet printed on [2]pages folded laid into 1 printed folded sheet (wrapper) lightly finger soiled with small chip to rear wrap. A very good copy.
