THIS VOLUME HAS POE'S FIRST-EVER PUBLISHED, WORK, "TAMERLANE," ORIGINALLY RELEASED WHEN HE WAS ONLY 18

A hard-to-come-by early edition of Poe's works that was printed in 1859 and exceptionally well preserved. I have researched this volume back to its original newspaper advertisement found in the 1859 issue of the Gazette, Volume #5, where it was advertised at $0.75, "about $28 in today's money." This collection will be cherished and passed along to the next generation so they can remember one of the greatest writers in history and hold one of the most beautiful books of his works. We buy so many things in life that get thrown away, fall apart, or are forgotten about; this book will only gain in value and scarcity as time marches on. Yet, there is something so genuine and magical about holding and reading this volume; it cannot be explained—a culturally and historically important book in lovely condition. Just for an age reference, this book was printed and bound even before Abraham Lincoln became president! It Mesures 5 3/4'' x A little over 3 3/4'' and comprises 278 pages with extras.

The overall condition of this book is very good despite being printed before Abe Lincoln became president. It does have some normal wear and age associated with a book of the 19th century. This includes rubbing, scratches, small stains, and shelf wear to the cover and spine. The interior pages are naturally age toned and have some scattered age spots and little marks here or there. All in all, this book has been exceptionally well preserved and cared for despite being so ancient.

This text is derived from inside of the book:
"Entered accordingly to Act of Congress in the year 1859 by J. S. Redfield In the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York."

"The Poetic Principle" is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe, written near the end of his life and published posthumously in 1850, the year after his death. It is a work of literary criticism, in which Poe presents his literary theory. It is based on a series of lectures Poe had given late in his lifetime.

From the Poe Society regarding this publication by this publishing house:
"J. S. Redfield 1859 or 1860 - (There is no date on the title page, but 1859 is given as the copyright, and it was in 1859 that Redfield surrendered the rights to its various editions, so the date may be accepted. It was advertised as early as March 29, 1859, in American Publishers' Circular, listing Redfield as the publisher, but as early as March 12, 1859, Redfield was listed as an agent rather than as a publisher. The original price was 75 cents. On May 14, 1859, it was noted as being in press, to be ready about June 1, although technically, Redfield is listed in this advertisement as an agent rather than as the publisher. An advertisement for May 7, 1859, lists the Poe book of poetry, in this format, as being published by Blakeman & Mason, and another work is listed with the parenthetical note "in connection with J. S. Redfield." By June 11, 1859, Redfield is noted as publishing "a new work by Simms.")

Edgar Allan Poe born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly mystery and macabre tales. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. He is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging science fiction genre. He was the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
