About This Item

London: printed for Jacob Tonson, at the Judges-Head near the Inner-Temple-Gate in Fleet-street, 1695. Hardcover. Folio, [6], 219, [1], 219-343, [3]; [2], 66; [6], 57, [1]; [4], 9, [2], 10-11, [2], 12-60; [2], 321, [1] pages, [13] leaves of plates. Bound in full brown calf; repaired by Jon Robbins. Frontispiece, title page, separate Paradise Lost title page, "The Verse," and the engraving for the first book are all modern facsimiles; originals now lacking. Text block very slightly age-toned and foxed; scattered damp staining and scattered small stains. Archival repairs to several pages and plates. Small open tear to title page of Paradise Regain'd. A few words lacking from final leaf due to archival repair. Title pages for Samson Agonistes and "Notes on Milton's Paradise Lost" are lacking. Frontispiece portrait (in this copy, a facsimile) of the author by William Faithorne (plate) signed: R White sculp:. Most of the 12 illustrations for Paradise lost are engraved by Michael Burghers or Peter Paul Bouche. Text is continuous despite pagination. According to K.A. Coleridge, p. 274, "Jacob Tonson issued two collections in 1695, parts of which are in large part the same, but with different arrangements". This coply is an example of Coleridge's first collection, which includes a general title page. "Paradise lost" is in the setting of 1695 (this setting includes printed line numbers); "Paradise regain'd" and "Samson Agonistes" are dated 1688; "Poems upon several occasions" (the third edition) and Hume's Annotations are both dated 1695.
