The Cherokee Indians, one of the Five Civilized Tribes, were an independent nation within the US with a democratic government, body of laws, and a system of administration until their forced removal which caused them to rebuild the system in a new location. The Civil War and a new federal land policy destroyed the independent Cherokee Nation. The struggle against the railroads, settlers, and government agents was to much as the political identity of the Cherokees ended. This book is a classic account of the price the Cherokees paid for white expansion. Review copy slip from OU Press is laid-in dated Mar 02 1978. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
