FIRST EDITION 1811. 4to, approximately 310 x 240 mm, 12 x 9½ inches, 30 fine hand coloured plates, in line stipple and aquatint, engraved and coloured by William Hooker, 27 after Elisabeth Matthews and 3 after Frances Knight, Plate 1 is the only plate with the artist and engraver printed at lower edge. Pages: title page, [viii], [37] - unnumbered descriptive pages of text, rebound in modern half red morocco, 2 gilt lettered black labels, gilt floral decoration between raised bands, gilt date at foot, marbled boards and endpapers, and cream fly leaves. Title page lightly creased, 9 pages including 2 plates have pale browning to lower corner (see attached images), pale offset from images to text, some light foxing to text and blank side of plates, 16 plates are clean, the rest have small patches of pale staining to blank surounds, otherwise a very good copy. Pomona Herefordiensis was originally issued in 10 parts between 1808 and 1811 by the Agricultural Society of Herefordshire (of which Knight was a founder member), and was re-issued in 1820; the first issue was printed by Bulmer and bears his name on the title as here. In addition to the descriptions and illustrations of the varieties of fruits, the work is notable for its preface, which outlines the principles of CIDER making. See: H.
