About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1946. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. This is a first printing of the first edition, with the "First Published 1946" statement on the verso of the title page. The interior of the book is clean and complete. The paper has darkened slightly, and there is a neat gift inscription to a former owner on the front free end paper. The blue cloth covers are bright, with light wear and handling. The silver gilt spine lettering and cover illustration are still bright. The dust jacket is also in very good condition, with visible edge wear, including several chips and short tears. The attached scan should give a better idea of condition. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. Synopsis: set just after the end of WW II. Jane, Andy and Colin Atherly arrived to the South of France to join their pony-mad cousins in a vacation house which had until recently been occupied by the Germans. They arrived in holiday mood fresh from war-time England. On arrival they found that their cousins' arrival had been delayed, and worse, that the ponies had disappeared. Pierre, alocal boy helps them track down the stolen ponies and break up a group of collaborationists and spies.
