This 1980's re-issue of Viking's Portable Hawthorne, edited by Malcolm Cowley, contains the complete "The Scarlet Letter" as well as selections from "The Custom House," "The House of Seven Gables," "The Blithedale Romance," :The Marble Faun," and "The Dolliver Romance." Also 13 of Hawthorne's best stories, passages from his American notebooks, unexpurgated passages from his European notebooks and a dozen of his letters. Third edition, first printing (originallly published in 1948, revised and expanded in 1969, with 3rd edition in new format in 1983. About 4 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches, 698 pages including editor's introduction and short bibliography. Brown paper-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Front panel of dustjacket features portrait painting by Joseph Amato. Upper corners of boards bumped, erasure shadows of sales prices upper corner of front end page, o/w very minimal flaws or damage to boards or text. Binding tight, hinges intact. Clean, complete, no highlighting or underlining. Dj shows half-inch tears both lower corners of front panel. o/w only minimal surface and edge wear. A sturdy reading/study copy providing good overall view of Hawthorne's work. . Very Good. Hardcover. 3rd Edition. 1st Printing. 1983.
