Color facsimile portrait, 21.5 x 17 cm., suitable for framing; printed for the American College of Physicians' Forty-third Annual Session, April 9-13, 1962 in Philadelphia. German-born Van Calcar studied with Titian and worked in Italy. Andreas Vesalius (Andries van Wesel) was another Northerner who made his career in Italy; born in Brussels in 1514, he became professor of surgery and anatomy at Padua in 1538, where he produced the book that is the foundation of modern anatomy.
