About This Item
[NATION OF ISLAM].
A fine portrait of Nation of Islam leader, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the mentor of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan, in oil paint, framed in gilt wood, with canvas and gilt metal matting. This painting, with an especially exquisite rendering of Elijah Muhammad's iconic crushed black velvet diamond-encrusted kofia, was sourced in Bedford-Stuyvesant, home of Masjid Abdul Muhsi Khalifah, Temple 7C of the Nation of Islam, which was purchased by Malcolm X in the 1960s.
Though unsigned, the portrait was executed by a talented portraitist, and is far superior to other images based on the NOI leader's famous official photo.
Elijah Muhammad, though a complicated man, was one of the most influential black leaders of the twentieth century, whose message had an outsize impact on politics, civil rights, and black nationalism in the United States.
c.1960s-1970s. 20 x 24 inches, in a Dae Ryung Co. frame, and evidently previously auctioned, to judge by the sticker and markings on the verso.
