PORTRAIT OF GEOFFREY SCOTT by Rothenstein, Sir William - undated]

PORTRAIT OF GEOFFREY SCOTT

by Rothenstein, Sir William

  • Used
[ Np, undated]. Original portrait drawing, in sanguine and white, on a sheet of grey michalet paper, 38 x 29 cm. Fine, mounted via a vinyl sleeve in a captioned mat of ca. 1960s vintage, the latter a bit darkened and smudged. A striking portrait of Scott (1884-1929), almost full face, unsigned, but captioned "G.Scott" in the lower margin in pencil in the artist's hand. In the course of his dramatically short life, Scott left a significant mark in the fields of arts and letters. As an undergraduate, he was invited to Florence by Bernard Berenson, an occasion that led to his close friendship with John Maynard Keynes, and eventually to his acting as Berenson's secretary-librarian from 1907-1909. He established an informal architectural partnership with Cecil Pinsent, and in 1914, published the quite influential work, THE ARCHITECTURE OF HUMANISM. In spite of the somewhat complex sexual aspects it entailed, he entertained a passionate love affair with Vita Sackville-West from 1923-5, the period leading up to his publication of THE PORTRAIT OF ZÉLIDE. This latter work drew him to the attention of Col. Ralph Isham, who invited him to prepare for publication the Boswell papers Isham had coaxed from Malahide Castle. Scott was engaged in this project until, after a short holiday back home in the UK, he contracted pneumonia and died in New York in 1929. The editorship was then assumed by Frederick Pottle. Scott's POEMS were published posthumously in 1931. While the occasion upon which this portrait was made is not readily ascertainable, certainly the Rothenstein and Scott paths must have frequently intersected.

Description:
[Np, ca. 1917].. Approximately 22 x 11 cm, in contemporary mat (the latter 35.5 x 25 cm). Mat edgeworn and somewhat dust darkened, with a few minor spots, but generally very good. A charming period drawing, inscribed as a gift to his model, Hildegarde Hirsch on the mat: "To Hildegarde on her sixteenth birthday. Rockwell." There is also a small 'H' in the lower right foreground of the image in his hand. Hildegarde Hirsch was a performer with the Ziegfeld Follies, and was both Kent's model and his lover. "The reference to 'sixteenth' birthday is facetious, as there is evidence that she was in her 20s when they met and may have been married and separated prior to the relationship with RK" - Stanley, REDISCOVERING ROCKWELL KENT. The drawing was published, without color, in the November 1917 issue of VANITY FAIR, and this original was included in the 1997 Grolier Club exhibition. GROLIER (STANLEY) 9.

[Probably Big Sur, CA.], no date.. Original watercolor on paper, 19.5 x 21cm, matted. Not examined out of mount, but visible portions a trace tanned, otherwise near fine. A characteristic watercolor, likely painted during the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are shades of blue and black. The painting depicts a male and a female figure, in a bathtub, exposed from mid- chest up. Not signed by Miller, but inscribed by his friend Emil White, who functioned during his Big Sur residence (1944-62) as his aide/secretary in correspondence with painting customers and the public: "This was painted but not signed by H.M. A classic Audubon still life: a charming composition of two mice nibbling on a corncob in a harvested field. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (Philadelphia c.1845-48) represents the culmination of a lifelong dream held by America's most prominent naturalist and visionary, John James Audubon (1785-1851). Following the completion of his magnum opus, the Double Elephant Folio Edition of Birds of America, c. 1824-38, Audubon was at liberty to pursue a project close to his heart, large scale portraits of all of North America's native animals. John Murray, London, first edition, 1975. Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm,. xiv, 193 pp, plates, ills. From the blurb: "Max Beerbohm and William Rothenstein first met in 1893, two precocious young men with their sights set on London. Their friendship warmed and prospered, though nmch of it was at a distance and took the form of letters. Thus it is preserved for us in one of the last great correspondences, a glortous relic of the pre-telephone age. The subjects on which they wrote were as multifarious as one could wish for-in particular their own and others' efforts in painting, caricature, drama and prose; the vagaries of the famous and infamous. Even after the First War, when the world in which they had made their names had gone for ever, their comments remain informed and acute. Rothenstein by then was head of the Royal College of Art and Beerbohm, although living in Italy, was still producing his inimitable caricatures. As well as explanatory notes, including many outstanding passages from Max's… Read More
