[The Portrait of Artist in Byzantium]

Byzantium had neither an elder Plinius nor a Basari to write "stories" for artists. The number of works of byzantine art that have survived is much more bigger than the number of the names of byzantine artists we know. So why the byzantine artists did not sign their works? Is it an art of "anonymous" artists? And if so, what interpretations we could give for this? But as "anonymous", the byzantine artist did not cease be a member of the society of his time. What, therefore, was the social status and position? And how the social identity of an artist changed through the centuries? In such questions the author attempts to answer using every possible information from written sources but also these very works of byzantine art.
