About This Item

[New York: Byrd Hoffmann Foundation, 1976. Unbound. Fine. Poster. Measuring 23¾" x 36". Very slight curl from being gently rolled, nominal creasing mostly confined to the extremities, just about fine. Signed by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson. An early state of the poster for the original 1976 production, printing only the title and Landry's iconic black and white photograph of two leaping dancers (with Landry's printed photo credit). Reportedly the poster came from someone who worked for the advertising agency who designed the poster; the final printed poster has detailed printed information about the production. Photographer Richard Landry was a founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble and played with the group until 1981. "Einstein on the Beach" premiered on July 25, 1976, at the Avignon Festival in France, performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble and presented by the Byrd Hoffmann Foundation. The opera was also staged that summer in Hamburg, Paris, Belgrade, Venice, Brussels, Rotterdam. Presumably rare (and frankly, quite striking) in the minimalist advance state; we note one holding, at Yale.
