New York: C. M. Saxton, 1855. Third edition - enlarged and revised. Slight wear to spine head, plates quite toned, else very good. 330 pp. + 6 pages adverts at rear, frontispiece and 2 engraved plates, many engraved illustrations in the text, small octavo, black cloth embossed in gilt and blind.

John Fisk Allen is credited with producing and marketing the first hybrid between the native American grape "Vitis labrusca" and the European "Vitis vinifera." "Allen's Hybrid" was a major breakthrough for American viticulture. Originally published in 1847. Amerine & Borg 32; Gabler (2nd ed.) 7232.
