New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1859. Octavo, vi, 130, [2] pages. Ads. First edition. James Caird (1816-92) was an agriculturalist and member of the British Parliament, author of English Agriculture, Letters on the Corn Crops, High Farming, and The West of Ireland. This volume was the result of a tour he undertook in 1859 through Canada and the American Midwest. Much of the volume is devoted to Illinois, though Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio receive a fairly thorough treatment. Includes sections on the quality of the soils, on prairie grasses, Indian corn, and more. A bit of a tide line to the fore edge of the title page; some light foxing throughout; in gilt-titled mauve cloth, with a bit of sun fading to spine, but otherwise near fine. While present in many institutional collections, this title remains scarce in the trade. [Howes C19; Sabin 9854].
