There follows a long and involved history from Mrs Lancaster which includes an abortion, teaming up with a criminal gang and a number of murders brought on by distress over her lost child. After her candour, Mrs Lancaster attempts to kill Tuppence, first with poisoned milk, then with a metal blade but Tuppence is saved just in time.
