"Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946) was an American forester and politician who served as the first Chief of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and later as the Governor of Pennsylvania. He is best known for his role in establishing the concept of conservation in the United States. Pinchot studied forestry in Europe and brought these ideas back to the United States. He believed in the sustainable use of natural resources and advocated for the scientific management of forests. In 1905, under President Theodore Roosevelt, Pinchot was appointed as the first Chief of the USFS. During his tenure, he significantly expanded the national forest system and implemented policies to ensure their sustainable use. Pinchot also served two terms as the Governor of Pennsylvania."
