New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1950. First edition, 1950. Rust-colored cloth, 182 pages, no dustjacket. Light shelfwear, mainly rubbing to the spine ends, good hinges, sound text block, rear endpapers toned from the clippings, pages generally clean with some of Snow's pencil notes. Collected essays by ten authoritative authors on the subject of American primitive painters, illustrated throughout in black and white plus a color frontis. Invidual artists discussed include: Eunice Pinney; Ruth Henshaw Bascom; Edward Hicks; Mary Ann Willson; Rufus Porter; James Sanford Ellsworth; Erastus Salisbury Field; William Matthew Prior; Deborah Goldsmith; Joseph H. Davis; Thomas Chambers; Joseph Whiting Stock; James and John Bard; Joseph H. Hidley; Olaf Krans; Paul Seifert. Signed by both authors on the half-title. This copy belonged to Julia D. S. Snow (1891-1984), noted antique dealer, collector and author from Greenfield, Massachusetts, with her name and address written prominently on the front free endpaper, a few of her additions to the index, and several clippings and some photos which we've put into an archival sleeve and left with the book. . Signed by the Authors. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
