London: John Murray, 1835.. Fourth edition. Four volumes. Small 8vo. Contemporary tan half calf over marbled boards, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered maroon labels to one panel and numbered direct to the compartment below, early owner's initials to the front free endpaper of volume I ("W.L.D."). Frontispiece and 15 plates (including maps), mostly folding and a few with original hand colouring, plus numerous figures in the text. A little light edge wear with slight loss to the head of volume IV, else very good. "...Lyell probably accomplished more in the advancement of geological knowledge than any other one man. The world wide influence of his treatises and textbooks definitely established the principles of uniformitarianism" (Mather and Mason p. 263). Donovan, pp. 89-90. The first edition of the "Principles" appeared in three volumes published between 1830 and 1833, with second editions of volumes I and II appearing in 1832. The fourth volume concluded Lyell's text and first appeared in the third edition of the previous year.
