Many of the entries include extracts from the letter or other document described. From the preface: "In the compilation of this work three classes of people have been kept in mind. First, the student in search of historical or literary facts. Second, the collector interested only in certain subjects or persons. Lastly, the dealer, to whom the financial side is of primary importance. Practically every Autograph Letter, Document, and Manuscript, irrespective of the price realised, is faithfully recorded, A considerable interest is taken in certain celebrities whose writings are not of great commercial importance, and it has been thought desirable to include all these in the work, however small the commercial value of their manuscript may be...
