London: Privately Published. Very Good+. 1896. Pirated edition. Hardcover. Limited to 100 copies, this is number 33. This pirated Second Edition follows an 1891 printing of 50 copies. This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and beginning wear. The text pages are clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable generalized foxing. Included is chapter VIII: Literature: Idealistic: Walt Whitman, which gives one of the first elevated discussion of homosexuality in Whitman's work. "John Addington Symonds ( 5 October 1840 – 19 April 1893) was an English poet and literary critic. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. Although he married and had a family, he was an early advocate of male love (homosexuality) , which he believed could include pederastic as well as egalitarian relationships, referring to it as l'amour de l'impossible (love of the impossible). He also wrote much poetry inspired by his homosexual affairs." .
