About This Item

Boston: Charles C. Little & James Brown, 1845. First edition. Softcover. Good. 8vo. pamphlet. 23pp. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued. Sabin 111219. Kress C6561. Inscribed to the "Hon. John Quincy Adams with respects from the author" on front wrapper. This is an argument challenging the views of many southern commentators that northern manufacturers derived unfair profits from the tariff on cotton. The Lowell textile mills, in particular, were a target of criticism, due to the high profile of their shareholders who were men of great wealth. Cary argued that the dividend streams of the textile mills in aggregate often compare unfavorably with other industries and pointed to the failure rate of many mills in New England. He also claimed that the superiority of northern textile manufacturers increased international demand for American goods, thereby protecting the market for southern cotton. Wrappers somewhat soiled with spine partially split. One vertical crease mark. Text is clean.
