FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST TECHNICAL PAPER ON COMPUTER CHESS" (Christies, Origins of Cyberspace Auction, 2005). Claude Shannon's seminal 1950 paper is considered "the foundation of computer chess" (Reilly, Milestones in Computer Science and Information Technology, 55). "The framework he introduced has guided most of the subsequent analysis of the problem" (Newell, Shaw, & Simon, 44). "Since the mid-1940s, scientists had aimed to create a thinking machine, an apparatus that could compete with or even surpass the human brain in logical operations, pattern recognition, problem solving and even language. Chess was found to be a useful testing ground because of its combination of simple rules and mind-bending complexity... Shannon was fascinated by chess' potential in the pursuit of what he called 'mechanized thinking.' But he became convinced that computer chess and other AI pursuits should not be modeled on human thought... Computers, at least as they were understood then, could calculate very quickly, following programmed instructions" (Shenk, 201, 211). Shannon believed that chess would be the ideal proving ground for this new type of intelligence. Believing that theoretically, "the game could be fully converted into one long mathematical formula," Shannon's paper was "concerned with the problem of constructing a computing routine or 'program' for a modern general purpose computer which will enable it to play chess" (Shannon; Shenk). It "was the first publication to describe how a position might be evaluated and how a game tree might be searched. The paper was the text of a lecture given by Shannon to the Institute of Radio Engineers on 9 March 1949) (Cooper & Leeuwen, Alan Turing, 644). This paper also includes an aside that came to be known as 'the Shannon number," the number of possible chess games that can be played. That number, also known as "the game tree complexity of chess," is based on Shannon's calculation on a logical approximation that each game has an average of 40 moves and each move a player chooses between 30 possible moves. That makes a total of 10120 possible games. This number is known as the number of Shannon. Shannon, an electrical engineer, was also known as "the father of information theory." Of these, the strongest players were Bernard, Carlier, Leger, and Verdoni. Philidor, constantly resident in London, took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. Only four masters of the group, considered the strongest, are known: Bernard, Carlier, Leger and Verdoni. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. The five examined offprints [as here] have been oddly but consistently constructed. The first leaf (wrapper title) is tipped onto a gathering formed by pages 257-272 (signed 'U'). Pages 273-276 (276 is blank) are formed by folding a single sheet once and tipping that unsigned gathering to the verso of the ‘U' gathering. This example with hard creases on pp 271-274, soft creasing to upper right corner, and light soiling to (mostly) the upper third of the front wrapper. A remarkable survival of a fragile item. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. Aron Nimzowitsch captured first prize, playing at that time, the hyper-modern openings. He did not lose a game with a score of 8. Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

Georg Kieninger was clear third with 5 1/2 points. Tied for fourth and fifth were Erich Eliskases and Herbert Heinicke both with 5 points. Josef Lokvenc and Alexander Petrov were half point behind and shared sixth and seventh. Clear eighth was Friedrich Sämisch with a score of 4. He wrote with Alan C. White's Christmas Series Schachprobleme Weiss: Dame und ein Läufer (1911), Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze in 1928 and Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze II in 1947. Seven years later, she moved to Tblisi, where she trained with Georgian grandmasters. Her shrewd, aggressive play won her great success early in her career. In 1961, she won the Women's Candidates Tournament. The following year, she challenged Elizaveta Bykova in the Women's World Championship and won. Her victory in this tournament brought her fame and made her a symbol of regional pride in Georgia. Nona Gaprindashvili went on to win the Women's World Championship four more times. Three of these matches were against Alla Kushnir, while the last was against Nana Alexandria, a fellow Georgian. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner.
