Moderate pushing at the spine ends with a few very small marks to the spine. The gilt titling remains bright. Light toning to the text-block and page edges. Free from inscriptions. The photogravure portrait frontispiece is present and clean. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Good++ or better condition. Loss at the spine ends and the front panel lower edge. Some creasing and nicks to the edges with tape remnants to the verso. Some age related markings in places. An area of damp staining to the upper spine with a revised price sticker to the lower spine. The wrapper remains attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The first three lectures in this book were prompted by Rivers' acceptance of the invitation to become a candidate for representing the University of london in Parliament. The final chapter is 'the influence of the late W.H.R. Rivers'. 'William Halse Rivers Rivers (12 March 1864 4 June 1922) was an English anthropologist, neurologist, ethnologist and psychiatrist, best known for his work treating First World War officers who were suffering from shell shock. Rivers' most famous patient was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, with whom he remained close friends until his own sudden death. Rivers was a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and is also notable for his participation in the Torres Straits expedition of 1898 and his consequent seminal work on the subject of kinship.' (Wiki). A very scarce title with the original wrapper. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
