About This Item
2 works in 1 volume small 8vo. 1). 120 leaves. 2). (1 blankl eaf). 52 leaves.. Full calf, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet around covers with gilt fleurons in corners (18th-century binding, corners dulled). 1). Second edition, largely original, of this "pure masterpiece of the Lyon school" (as stated by Brun) of Renaissance illustrated books, of which the printer Jean de Tournes and the painter-draftsman Bernard Salomon were the most famous protagonists. Adorned with a title set in a fine frame of engraved arabesques, and two hundred and thirty-one woodcuts after drawings by Bernard Salomon, this edition contains thirty-three more engravings than the first of 1533. 2). Original edition illustrated with ninety-six woodcuts after Bernard Salomon. The Morgan library copy, like ours, features the 1555 "Quadrins Historiques" and the 1556 "Figures du Nouveau Testament" bound together. A rather handsome copy bound in 18th-century blond calf. It is short of margins: the binder's knife has trimmed a few millimeters of the ornaments on the two title pages, as well as a few decorative bands and half a line of text at the top of two pages. An otherwise very good copy. 1). Cartier, Bibliographie des éditions des de Tournes, 292. Brun, Illustrated Books of the Renaissance, 132.
