Alain was the pseudonym of French educator and philosopher Émile-Auguste Chartier (1868-1951). He was a professor at the Lycée Henri IV, Paris, from 1909 to 1933 and had a profound influence upon the thinking of his students, who included Simone Weil, Raymond Aron, André Maurois, Julien Gracq, and many others.
Beginning in 1903, he published a series of newspaper columns, at first weekly, then daily from 1906 to September 1914. He served in the military and was injured and later discharged. In the interwar years, he was very active in pacifist and antifascist circles.
This volume, nicely printed on fine paper, assembles the "short chapters" of the daily columns into a sustained work of philosophy in seven parts.
