About This Item

New York: G. W. Dillingham Company. Very Good-. 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. May Agnes Fleming (1840 - 1880) was a popular 19th century Canadian author who wrote a number of books, many issued at first as dime novels in serial form. It is not entirely clear when this book was first published--Wright (# 918) records a book 151 p. long titled "Sybil Campbell; or the Queen of the Isle" with an 1863 date which appears to be similar to this book, but shorter in length (it appears under her pseudonymn: Cousin May Carelton). The 1863 publication may have been a first serial issue of this book. This later, longer version is not in Wright, though a number of other books by her are recorded. The pages in this copy are lightly tanned and two pages are loose. There is some rubbing to the dark green cloth publisher's covers; the gilt spine lettering is bright. Contains seven pages of G.W. Carleton ads for other books in rear. George Washington Carleton and George Wellington Dillingham were in business together by 1871 using the Carleton Publishing Co. name. In 1886 G. W. Carleton left the firm and the name was changed to the G. W. Dillingham Co. The copyright date of this title is 1886. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 400 pages .
