About This Item

London: Printed for and Sold by G. B. Pim, 124, Bishopsgate Street, Without, 1842. First Edition. Wraps. Good. First Edition. 16 pages plus printed yellow wrappers. 2 5/8 x 4 1/8 inches. Overall wear to the wrappers, clean internally. String tied. Front wrapper is an illustration of a 32-point compass rose. Rear wrapper is "Pence Table in Verse" Wraps. The front wrapper adds "A New edition, for the Use of Schools." OCLC shows no copies, nor do we find any online at the moment. The back wrapper another chapbook "The History of Little Red Riding Hood..." also by Pim notes he is a printer, stationer, bookseller and publisher. And "The trade and hawkers supplied". The British Book Trade Index shows Pim in business from 1834-1842.

An interesting chapbook focused primarily on commerce, with a 32-point compass rose (used in navigation, often on compasses hence the name). It starts with basic arithmetic, includes a chart of Roman Figures, addition, subtraction, and multiplication tables. Then Money (Farthings, Pence, Shillings), basic weights and measures, standard measures of capacity including ale, beer, wine and spirit measures, etc. It also contains some odd measurements - paper, books, British coins, and even receipts upon payment of money. By a careful review, this chapbook could probably be dated more closely given that there were a series of new laws in London in the 1830s-1850s dealing with new standards.
