About This Item

Lisbon, Impressão de Eugenio Augusto, 1828.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, stitched. Small woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Uncut. In very good condition. 19 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. In the dispute over who should succeed D. João VI as king of Portugal, the author favors D. Miguel, who reigned as D. Miguel I (1828-1834), over D. Pedro IV (Emperor D. Pedro I of Brazil). This pamphlet includes much discussion of the relationship of Brazil to Portugal, and the behavior of Brazilians and D. Pedro. This densely written pamphlet evoked several responses: Refutação do monstruoso e revolucionario escripto impresso em Londres, intitulado, Quem he o legitimo Rei de Portugal? E do periodico A trombeta final (Rio de Janeiro, 1828); and O folheto Quem he o legitimo rei? Victoriosamente vendicado das frivolas impugnações de hum portuguez residente em Londres: confutação politica (n.p., 1828). Francisco Recreio (Cacilhas, 1800-Lisbon, 1857), who died of yellow fever, was a secular presbyter, Examinador Synodal do Patriarchado, and a member and the librarian of the Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa. He wrote several works in defense of the clergy, a vitriolic response to Herculano's comments on the Battle of Ourique, some eulogies, and other works. *** Canto, Ensaio bibliographico, catálogo das obras nacionaes e estrangeiras relativas aos successos politicos de Portugal nos annos de 1828 a 1834 (1892) 1303: attributing the work to P. Francisco Recreio, and publication to Francisco Maria Pires (although Canto gives the imprint as Lisbon: Imp. de Eugenio Augusto). Innocêncio II, 465 (attributing the work to Francisco Maria Pires); III, 44 (stating that he has been informed that Pires was the publisher, and the author was Francisco Recreio; see III, 41-44 for more on the author); IX, 367 (adding information about Recreio's parents and birthplace). Fonseca, Pseudónimos p. 253: attributing the work to Francisco Recreio. Porbase locates four copies at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal and one at Biblioteca João Paulo II-Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Not located in Jisc.
